Make it louder

Standing next to a vehicle as it vibrates so violently its windshield deforms from the pressure is sort of amazing. It’s also terrifying, since anyone sitting inside without hearing protection would most likely be bleeding from their ears and suffer permanent hearing damage — inside the car, massive subwoofer and speakers are pushing the volume past 150 decibels.

Edmonton has always been known as a driving city. The roads are wide and the sidewalks sometimes non-existent. When a politician wants to score some quick points, they talk about paving potholes and extending roads into the suburbs.

But slowly, attitudes in the capital city are changing. While transit has made the bigger splash when it comes to city dollars and big projects, bicycle commuting is increasingly gaining in popularity.

But Beth (whose name has been changed to protect her identity) has struggled with bipolar disorder — something she’s had to deal with throughout her entire university career. She’s also attempted suicide when she was a teenager.
