Election avoided after NDP, Bloc Québécois support government with confidence vote

OTTAWA (CUP) — There won’t be an election just yet if the NDP and the Bloc Québécois have anything to say about it.

In the first confidence vote of the fall, both parties supported the Conservatives in passing a motion that will implement several tax breaks and provisions that were originally presented with the budget earlier this year.

GO Centre to be built after funding approval

With a funding announcement last Friday, the planned GO Community Centre on the University of Alberta’s South Campus is set to begin soon.

A $14.8-million commitment from the federal government ensured that construction will begin on the building that will house a state-of-the-art gymnastics centre and four triple gymnasiums, enough room for 12 basketball or 30 volleyball courts.

New teacher attrition an increasing concern

Ongoing research at the University of Alberta has revealed a phenomenon which has become more noticeable in recent years, as an estimated 30 per cent of new teachers are leaving the profession in their first five years on the job.

Jean Clandinin, who is director of the Centre for Research for Teacher Education and Development at the U of A, is heading the research project.

Researcher wins innovation award

A University of Alberta professor and researcher may have a harder time carrying his wallet after being awarded $100,000 for his development of nano-silver wound dressings.

The first-place prize from the Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation recognizes the influential innovation of Robert Burrell, chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Students’ Council meets every second Tuesday in the Council Chambers in University Hall at 6 p.m. Council meetings are open to all students. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 15, where free food will be provided for all attendees.

U of A research chair loses community funding pledge

The County of Strathcona has requested the repayment of a $1.5-million loan to the University of Alberta given in 1998 to support the Strathcona County/R.U. Lemieux Chair in Carbohydrate Chemistry.

Although the chair will still continue to exist based on the remainder of its endowment, the University will be forced to reallocate internal funding to support the position.

Student co-op housing group meets Tuesday

Organizers of a co-operative student housing project are meeting Tuesday in an effort to generate interest in a facility being built in north-east Edmonton.

The development’s conceptualization, called Station Pointe, is in its preliminary stages. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin next fall on land that has been secured near the Belvedere LRT station.
